Caregiver Sentenced to Prison in Elderly Woman's Death

SALISBURY, Md.- A Wicomico County Circuit Court judge on Friday sentenced a Fruitland woman to 20 years in prison after she entered pleas on counts of second-degree murder and abuse/neglect of a vulnerable adult.

Becky Ann Long, 45, was arrested in connection with the July 2015 death of 68-year-old Mary Ellen Bonniwell. According to police, Long and Bonniwell lived together at a home on Morris Street in Fruitland, where Long had been Bonniwell's caretaker for more than a year. Prosecutors said Bonniwell, whose body was found inside the home, had multiple injuries, including asphyxia and blunt force injuries.

Long entered Alford pleas to the two charges. An Alford plea means a defendant enters a plea of guilty without making an admission of guilt. 

Long was also given an additional 15-year suspended prison term and will be placed on supervised probation for three years upon release.
