Officials Can't Confirm Connection Between UK Article and Local Bomb Threat Investigation

SALISBURY, Md.– An FBI spokesperson for the Baltimore division says her division has no knowledge of any local leads to come from a Daily Mail report claiming French officials have questioned and turned an 18-year-old hacker into an assisted witness in an investigation of bomb threats made across the globe.

According to the Daily Mail, a United Kingdom-based newspaper, French anti-terrorist police raided the home 18 year-old Vincent Lauton, taking him into custody in Paris and questioning him about numerous bomb threats made throughout the world, including the U.S. A later report by the same outlet said officials released him without charge and he is now an assisted witness.

The Daily Mail article raises questions as to whether this reported investigation could be a break in the case of multiple bomb threats made across Delmarva recently.

Regarding the threats made to Delmarva schools, the FBI Baltimore division says it is assisting in that investigation. However, FBI Media Specialist Amy Thoreson said her office has not been contacted and that, as far as she knows, the FBI is not involved in the French investigation.

“If there was a connection to our investigation we would be notified at some point," said Thoreson, “However, we have not been contacted.”

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis, like several other local law enforcement officials, has been involved in several conference calls with the FBI. Lewis confirmed he has not been notified of any connection at this point. Lewis said that could mean one of two things: either there is no connection between the Daily Mail article and the Delmarva bomb threats or the investigation is too preliminary for a connection to be made.

Regardless of where the local investigation stands, Lewis said he is encouraged by the recent news out of France and hopeful this will lead FBI investigators to solving what has been a frustrating spate of threats made to local schools on Delmarva.
