DNREC Announces Record Delaware Deer Harvest

DOVER, Del.- Delaware hunters harvested a record number of deer during the 2015 to 2016 season, according to the Department of Natural Resources' Division of Fish & Wildlife.

Hunters harvested 14,681 deer, topping the previous record of 14,669 set in the 2004 to 2005 season, DNREC announced Wednesday. Last season, hunters harvested 14,269 deer, which was previously the second-highest on record, DNREC said. Division of Fish & Wildlife biologist Joe Rogerson cited overall favorable hunting conditions over the season for the increase.

During the 2015 to 2016 season, hunters harvested more females than males, with 7,975 does and 6.706 bucks taken, Rogerson said. Anterless deer, which are does, juvenile bucks without antlers, antlered bucks with antlers measuring less than three inches, and bucks that had already shed their antlers when harvested, made up 71.3 percent of the total harvest, DNREC said.

Hunters also set a new harvest record for Sussex County, 7,960 deer total. Hunters also harvested a record number of adult does in a single season across the state at 6,869 and a record number of antlered bucks taken, at 4,218 total.
