Citing Violations, Virginia Revokes Licenses for 12 Watermen

Posted: Updated:

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP)- Virginia regulators have revoked the licenses of a dozen watermen for a variety of fisheries violations.

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission said the punishments announced Wednesday typically entail the two-year revocation of licenses to commercially harvest fish, oysters or crabs. The offenders include one Maryland waterman who failed to submit mandatory harvest reports.

The other waterman had violations that included taking oysters out of season, taking oysters from a condemned area, failure to take shellfish and exceeding daily catch limits, among other offenses. All were convicted in court on the violations before the commission revoked their licenses at its January and February meetings.
