Del. Prison Cancels Visits, Programs Amid Possible Flu Outbreak

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP/WBOC)- Delaware Department of Correction officials have canceled all visits and programs at a prison in Wilmington amid a possible flu outbreak.

Authorities said Wednesday that medical workers at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution have identified at least six inmates over the past 24 hours who may have the flu, and that 40 inmates who may have been exposed to the virus are being closely monitored.

Inmates who may have the flu are being housed in the infirmary and receiving treatment, and their cellmates remain isolated and have been provided anti-viral medication to prevent any spread of the virus.

Officials also say all transportation of inmates to and from the prison is halted through Friday.

According to the Division of Public Health, there have been 58 confirmed cases of the flu this season.
