ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Maryland state comptroller has suspended processing tax returns from 22 private tax preparers, and one of them is on Delmarva.

Charles Multi Services, located at 216 Carson Court in Pocomoke City, is on the list, issued Thursday by Comptroller Peter Franchot.

The full list includes 25 locations throughout the region and three out-of-state locations that have been suspected due to a high volume of questionable returns received.

According to the comptroller's office, the suspicious characteristics detected on the tax returns included:

• Business income reported when taxpayers did not own a business.
• Refund amounts requested much higher than previous year tax returns.
• Inflated and/or undocumented business expenses.
• Dependents claimed when taxpayer did not provide required 50 percent support or care, and/or
• Inflated wages and withholding information.
• Inflated itemized deductions.

The comptroller's office is urging taxpayers carefully review their returns for these issues and says to be suspicious if a tax preparer deducts fees from the refund, does not sign the tax return or fails to include a preparer taxpayer identification number “P-TIN” on the return. If fraud is suspected, report the issue by calling 1-800-MD-TAXES (1-800-638-2937) or by emailing TAXHELP@comp.state.md.us.
