SALISBURY, Md. - Leap day only happens every four years, but for many on Delmarva it's an extra special day.

Ever since she was little, Jaime Coates of Berlin, Md. has had very unique birthday celebrations.

That's because she was born on Feb. 29, 1988; meaning this year, she's turning 7.

"It's been a really great time getting to celebrate every four years," she said. "It just makes birthdays even that more special."

Coates isn't the only one making headlines for her leap day birthday. Derrick Mitchell of Federalsburg, Md. was born in 2008, and today is the second time since then that he's had a real birthday.

Carolyn Meekins of Chestertown, Md. was born in 1948 and she's celebrating her 17th birthday.

"I enjoy having a unique birthday," she said. "On the other three years, I can choose to have my birthday on the 28th or March the first."

And it's not just leap day babies, or "leaplings," celebrating. Businesses are getting in on the action as well.

For instance, website Travelocity has 29 percent off deals, and local restaurant The Greene Turtle is offering 29 cent wings.

"Since it is such a rare occasion," Mary Ann Patrick, the assistant general manager of the Salisbury Greene Turtle said. "We wanted to do something that people are going to remember."

And remember it they will.

"Being born on leap day has been a really fun experience," Coates added. "I work with a lot of kids and they always get really excited when they find out that they're probably older than myself as I'm turning 7-years-old today."
