CHESWOLD, Del.- Authorities say a man suffered serious injuries after he was struck by a car shortly after midnight Tuesday on US Route 13 in Cheswold.

Delaware State Police said the incident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. when 25-year-old Tabitha L. Abbott, of Dover, was operating a 2009 Nissan Altima and traveling in a southbound direction in the left hand lane of Route 13 and approaching Messina Hill Road in Cheswold. Troopers said it was at this point that Abbott observed someone, later identified as a 27-year-old Dover man, standing in the roadway between the left hand and right hand lanes.

Police said Abbott then swerved her car  to the left in an attempt to avoid striking the man; however, he stepped in front of her car. The left front bumper of Abbott’s car then struck the man who came to rest in the right hand lane of the roadway, according to police. They said Abbott was able to bring her car to a controlled stop just south of the victim.

The victim was treated at the scene by Kent County Paramedics before being transported to Kent General Hospital where he was admitted with serious injuries, police said.

The victim’s name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of his next of kin, according to police. They said alcohol use on the part of the victim is being considered as a factor in this crash.

Troopers said Abbott, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was not injured.

The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
