Delaware Flu Cases Nearly Double in Week; Vaccinations Urged

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP/WBOC) - Delaware is experiencing a late spike in flu cases this season with 92 lab-confirmed cases recorded last week.

The Delaware Division of Public Health said Wednesday that figure was roughly double the number of cases for the preceding week and could grow higher. Before Feb. 13, officials said only 100 people had tested positive for influenza.

The figures don't reflect a recent flu outbreak at Howard Young Prison that's sickened at least 30 inmates.

DPH Director Karyl Rattay says the reason for spike in cases is unclear. She says most of this season's flu cases were in people who weren't vaccinated, though there could be many unreported cases.

Although the spike is occurring relatively late, Rattay says this particular strain has repercussions.for certain groups of people.

"The particular strain we're seeing is H1N1. And that tends to infect children and young adults...That's important, because young adults tend to be the ones that don't get their flu vaccine," she said.

Rattay also says it is still very important to get your vaccine as flu season can run through April.

"The strains of influenza that are out there in the community this year are a good match for the vaccine, she said. "So the vaccine is showing good protection against influenza this year."
