DOVER, Del.- The City of Dover is taking offers on the old Dover Public Library building on State Street.

The city opened a new library in September 2012 because they needed more space for resources, books, technology and meeting rooms.

Dover City Manager Scott Koenig told WBOC Thursday the property is not currently listed by any real estate brokers.

"However, the city is willing to entertain offers on the property," he said. "We are in the process of seeking appraisals on the property to ascertain the market value of the property as it exists today."

Mayor Robin Christiansen said the building is very marketable, but there are advantages and disadvantages to selling it.

He said the property has been for sale since the big move to the Loockerman Street. address.

Some residents think the city should be putting the old library building to better use since they currently own it.

Marvis Colona of Dover has a family with kids, and he said it should be used to address a bigger problem in Dover.

"There are a lot of homeless people here in Dover, period. They should use that -- if not even for the children but for someone to lay their heads [down] at night," he said.

Another library user, Velma Robinson, said she does not want to seen it sold off.

"They have got to think it through and have something for the children, something for the homeless," she said.

Many viewers WBOC spoke with today shared some type of homeless project idea for the old library building.

Christiansen said one party that was interested in purchasing the old building was talking about creating a privately held Dover museum. He said no plans have ever come to fruition or resulted in any type of concrete deal.
