DENTON, Md.- Nine stations responded to a heavy fire at a house in Denton Tuesday.

Just after 4:30 a.m., the Denton Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a structure fire on 7th St.

Firefighters said they found heavy fire showing from the basement and heavy smoke pouring out of the upper floor windows when they arrived at the scene.

Because of the heavy fire and smoke on the first floor, firefighters said the floor collapsed. Crews said they had to use ladders to climb to the upper floor to battle the flames.

Denton firefighters said stations from Ridgely, Greensboro, Goldsboro, Queen Anne-Hillsboro, Preston, Bridgeville, Harrington and Federalsburg helped extinguish the blaze.

According to firefighters, crews remained on the scene until about 12:30 p.m. while the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office investigated.

No word yet on what caused the fire or if anyone was injured.
