Dover Police Arrest Man on Gun Charges After Brief Foot Chase

DOVER, Del. - Police say they arrested a local fugitive on weapons charges after he ran away from officers in Dover.

According to Dover police, officers responded to Whatcoat Drive around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a man with a handgun. Police say a caller informed them the man, later identified as 18-year-old Kevon McKinney of Dover, got a handgun from behind a bush and then returned to sit in the driver seat of a nearby car.

When officers arrived, they say McKinney ran southbound with the handgun visible, including past a school bus that was unloading children. Police say they caught up with McKinney and arrested him in a wooded area behind the Dover Federal Credit Union on Saulsbury Road. A loaded Beretta 9mm was found very close to that location, according to police.

McKinney was charged with possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, possession of a firearm in a school zone, tampering with physical evidence, resisting arrest, loitering and being a local fugitive. Police say McKinney was also on home confinement, and had both an active warrant from Delaware State Police Troop 9 as well as a capias from the Kent County Court of Common Pleas for a prior gun charge.

Police say McKinney was committed to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $25,000 cash and $4,353 secured bond.
