SALISBURY, Md.- Several students attending a middle school choral concert at Wicomico High School in Salisbury had to be taken outside the auditorium and given medical attention after they reported feeling ill on Friday morning.

According Wicomico County Public Schools spokesperson Tracy Sahler, Wi-Hi Auditorium is hosting the middle school choral festival, with chorus groups from middle schools from all over the Eastern Shore. Sahler said one middle school chorus from up the Shore had performed and then went into the sight reading room. Sahler said that at the end of the chorus’ time in that room, five to seven members of the chorus reported feeling ill. The chorus was taken outside while the students were receiving medical attention from school nursing staff and Salisbury EMS.

The chorus whose students reported symptoms completed its time at the festival and is no longer at the auditorium, according to Sahler. She said the festival is continuing and classes are continuing as scheduled.

Sahler said that at this time it appears a number of factors may have been involved: All seven of the students who reported feeling ill had not eaten breakfast prior to the festival, and the room in which the chorus did sight reading was warm at the time.

An evaluation of the situation is ongoing, according to Sahler.
