DOVER, Del.- A long anticipated project in Kent County is becoming more of a reality as the Delaware Department of Transportation broke ground on a Rte. 1 construction project Friday in Frederica.

The construction project will run through mid-2018, according to Jennifer Cohan, DelDOT secretary. It will include building ramps and realigning roads at the intersection of Rte. 1 and Tub Mill Pond Rd.

It benefits the Kent County Regional Sports Complex, which has been talked about for almost seven years now. The construction was stalled in 2013 as it sat far down on a DelDOT priority list.

According to Kent County Levy Court President Brooks Banta, that caused concern about the project in the county government.

"The former secretary, for some reason, pulled the plug on it," he said. "Jennifer Cohan... when she came on board, she moved it form the bottom of the list to the top of the list."

A groundbreaking ceremony was held today at the intersection. Gov. Jack Markell, Sen. Tom Carper and multiple regional representatives were in attendance.

Robert Smith, executive director of the sports complex, says they chose the location for a reason.

"We were able to select our site knowing that the ramp was on the  books and was going to be coming at some point," he said.

Banta says that point was, at one time, 25 years down the road.

The sports complex is slated to be competed in Spring of 2017. It will include 12 turf sports fields and one stadium-sized turf field. Certain fields will be lighted, and there will be food services on site.

Smith says it will play a big role in economic development for Kent County as it will draw teams, athletes, and families from all of Delmarva.
