Wicomico County Drug Dealer Sentenced to 25 Years

SALISBURY, Md. - A Salisbury man was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison for dealing drugs.

According to the office of the Wicomico County state's attorney, a judge sentenced 29-year-old Byron Smiley to 10 years for the charge of possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and 15 years for a subsequent charge of the same nature, to be served consecutively.

State's Attorney Matt Maciarello says the first charges stemmed from an incident on Sept. 3, 2015, when police searched 2509 N. Zion Road in Salisbury. Officers found a sleeping Byron Smiley in the home, as well as 139.9 grams of suspected cocaine, 3.8 grams of suspected marijuana and $1,022, according to Maciarello.

The second case occurred when Smiley was out on bond and awaiting trial on the felony drug charges, Maciarello says. On Jan. 11, police pulled Smiley over in the area of 804 East Railroad Avenue in Salisbury. Smiley was arrested after being found in possession of 3.37 grams of cocaine, which Maciarello says Smiley had secreted in his buttocks.

Smiley's sentencing took place on Monday. Ten of the 25 years are not eligible for parole, according to the state's attorney.
