SALISBURY, Md.- Authorities say a man with only his underwear on is accused of attempting to assault a Wicomico County sheriff's deputy.

The incident reportedly happened shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday, March 19 at a home on the 4000 block of Pheasant Drive in Salisbury. The sheriff's office said a deputy was at the home speaking with a man regarding his involvement in a hit-and-run accident when the man's housemate, 42-year-old Mark Townsend, walked out of the home clad only in his underwear.

According to investigators, Townsend began approaching the deputy in an aggressive manner while yelling loudly. Authorities said that as Townsend advanced toward the deputy with raised and clenched fists, the deputy instructed Townsend to go back inside the home. However, investigators said that instead of complying, Townsend continued toward the deputy making threatening profanity-laced statements. Authorities said when the deputy began to take Townsend into custody, Townsend struggled against the attempts of the deputy to place him into handcuffs while continuing to yell threats.

The deputy observed that Townsend was visibly intoxicated, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy did manage to subdue Townsend and place him into handcuffs, investigators said. Townsend was charged with attempted second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He was ordered held in the Wicomico County Detention Center in lieu of $5,000 bond.
