SALISBURY, Md. - Wicomico County Public Schools has a new superintendent.

At a special meeting Tuesday night, the Wicomico County Board of Education appointed Dr. Donna C. Hanlin as the next Superintendent of Schools.

Hanlin was one of three other candidates selected as finalists, all of whom have strong local connections.

Dr. Hanlin comes to Wicomico County from Shepherd University in West Virginia where she is currently the Co-Chair and Director of Assessment and Accountability in the Department of Education. Dr. Hanlin, however, grew up in Wicomico County, and even began her career first working as a school counselor, then serving as a assistant principal at Wicomico Middle and James M. Bennett High School and finally becoming the principal at James M. Bennett High School. Dr. Hanlin also served as Associate Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer for Washington county Public Schools.

Speaking after the announcement, Dr. Hanlin said she is looking forward to working with the community to improve the district for the children. "I want to bring all the stakeholders together and listen to what they aspire to, listen to their community and work together, because this is not something the school system can do in isolation."

Dr. Hanlin's appointment is effective July 1, 2016, the day after current Superintendent Dr. John Fredericksen retires.
