DOVER, Del. (AP)- Legislation to increase Delaware's current $8.25 minimum wage by $2 over four years is for debate in a House committee.

The bill, which passed the Democrat-led Senate on a party-line vote in January, was to be discussed Wednesday in the House economic development committee.

The proposal already has drawn heated discussion. To increase the chances of passage, the chief sponsor withdrew a provision mandating cost-of-living adjustments tied to Social Security benefit increases starting in 2021 and postponed the start of the annual 50-cent increases until 2017, instead of this year.

Supporters say the measure will help struggling low-wage earners. Opponents say it will lead to businesses cutting jobs, hiring fewer workers, especially young people, and even leaving Delaware.

Democratic Gov. Jack Markell hasn't said whether he supports the bill.
