March Declared Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Del.

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- Gov. Jack Markell signed a senate resolution Thursday that declares March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Delaware.

"Far too many families have been impacted by cancer, our legislative family included," said Markell. "Early detection is crucial to saving lives and while we have worked diligently to raise awareness, many Delawareans have not been screened."

The resolution hits home for members of the legislature as Senate Majority Leader David McBride undergoes treatment for the cancer.

Sen. McBride created the Delaware Cancer Consortium in 2001 and has said his diagnosis has made him focus on the advocacy work of groups like them.

"I really believe those efforts have saved lives by making colorectal cancer a priority," he said. "Not only because it's so prevalent, but also because it's beatable and treatable if it's caught early."

According to a press release from the state senate, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevent says about one in three adults in the United States aged 50 to 75 have not been tested for colorectal cancer.

The senate says through colorectal cancer screenings, doctors can find and remove precancerous growths, called polyps, in the colon. The proper screening can also help find the cancer early when the treatment is least costly and most effective.

Screenings include colonoscopies, stool tests and sigmoidoscopies, according to the release. The senate says this year 150 are expected to die from colorectal cancer.
