Delaware Officials Warn Residents to Watch for Phone Scams

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware officials are warning residents to watch out for phone scams this tax season.

The Consumer Protection Unit of the Delaware Department of Justice is getting a high volume of complaints from residents about callers pretending to work for the Internal Revenue Service.

Attorney General Matt Denn says the scammers will claim that the person has unpaid taxes they must pay immediately or face a lawsuit or arrest. Denn says the IRS will never make initial contact with taxpayers via telephone nor demand payment over the phone.

He says residents should ignore these calls and shouldn't return voice messages.
