Home-Gardeners Scramble Ahead of Hard-Freeze

Posted: Updated:

EDEN, Md.– It was a quieter day inside the greenhouse at “How Sweet it Is” farm market in Eden Tuesday. An early morning frost, combined with the hard-freeze expected Tuesday night made it a less than ideal day to pick out flowers for a garden.

Only a couple people are wandering around, picking up potted plants and inspecting them. One of those women is Carol Taylor.

“I woke up this morning,” said Taylor of Westover, “I go into the kitchen to fix some coffee and when I look outside there’s snow!”

The peculiar April scene left Taylor scrambling; broom in hand, sweeping the snow off her plants outside at 6 o’clock Tuesday morning.

Nancy Mysak, of Allen, is another of the few meandering about the plants and flowers. She was just as surprised by the less-than-spring-like day. With her garden already planted, she says her and her husband would be busy covering up the plants.

“We have to cover everything up,” said Mysak, “ We have arugula and a few other things and a lot of flowers in bloom.”

With a freeze warning in effect across the peninsula through Wednesday morning, both Taylor and Mysak say they’re looking forward to the cold temperatures leaving and spring weather making a return to Delmarva. Warmer weather, though, may not come until next week.
