DOVER, Del.- The Kent County Recreation Center has almost reached completion.

May 14 has been set as the grand opening day for the $10 million project that sits off New Burton Road in Camden.

The project is a partnership with the Greater Dover Boys and Girls Club. The recreation center will be on one side, and the Boys and Girls Club on the other.

The recreation center side includes gymnasium space that can be used as four full basketball courts and much more. There will also be a turf field outside.

Keith Mumford, the director of community services, says it will accommodate many types of people.

"You could lay out six volleyball courts, six tennis courts, six pickle ball courts," he said. "We'll have a netting system where we can drop it down and play in quarters, we can play in halves."

There is some concern about the location, though. Shauna, a woman who lives in Felton, told WBOC Wednesday she has nine children, and she does not think it's in an accessible location for them.

"It's not accessible for walking," she said. "It's a major, major route with no shoulders. You know, if you're willing to take the drive with your kids and go and sign them in and drop them off, I think it would be great."

Mumford says the location was chosen because of it's access points. He says the West Dover connector is being built just across from the center. That will provide an entrance from one side, and visitors can always enter on New Burton Road.

The Greater Dover Boys and Girls Club has also said they will be providing some transportation services, depending on the school district, for students who come to the center after school hours on a weekday.
