Physician Gets 9 Years in $3 Million Health Care Fraud

Posted: Updated:

GREENBELT, Md. (AP)- A Potomac physician who owned and operated a pain management clinic has been sentenced to 9 years in prison for a $3 million health care fraud scheme.

Sixty-year-old Paramjit Singh Ajrawat was also ordered to forfeit and pay restitution of $3 million at sentencing Monday in federal court in Greenbelt.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said in a news release that Paramjit Ajrawat and his wife, Dr. Sukhveen Kaur Ajrawat, owned and operated Washington Pain Management Center in Greenbelt.

Prosecutors say the Ajrawats filed claims for procedures that were not performed to Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE and other federal health benefit programs.

They were convicted in September of numerous offenses, including health care and wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and aggravated identity theft.

Prosecutors say Sukhveen Ajrawat died in February.
