WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.- Deputy State Fire Marshals arrested a Fruitland man in connection with two arson cases.

Officials arrested 24-year-old Kevin Leonard Scott Bethard Saturday night.

The first arson fire happened at a home on White Pond Drive in Salisbury back on March 25.  Investigators say Bethard illegally entered the home and set multiple fires. The smoke alarms woke up the person inside, who was able to escape without injury. A pet cat died in the fire. Damage to the home and contents was estimated at $250,000.

The second arson fire happened about two hours later, at a mobile home on Madeline Circle in Parsonsburg.  The investigation revealed Bethard illegally entered the building and set a fire inside. No one was inside, and the damage to the structure and contents totaled to $13,000.

Bethard is facing several charges, including: 2 counts 1st-degree arson, 2 counts 2nd-degree arson, 2 counts 2nd-degree malicious burning, 2 counts 3rd-degree burglary, 2 counts home invasion, attempted 1st-degree murder, attempted 2nd-degree murder, and animal cruelty.  He remains in custody at the detention center on no bond.
