CAMBRIDGE, Md.- A Cambridge woman has been sentenced after pleading guilty to theft from a local church.

According to the office of Dorchester County State's Attorney William Jones, 32-year-old Ashley Ellis was sentenced Tuesday in connection with the theft of thousands of dollars from the Bucktown United Methodist Church. She will spend 18 months behind bars at the Division of Corrections.

Ellis pleaded guilty to theft scheme between $10,000 and $100,000. The state's attorney's office says she accessed the church funds from a checking account controlled by a family member who served as the church's treasurer and then made unauthorized payments to herself from the account.

The court sentenced Ellis to 15 years in prison, suspending all but 18 months, according to prosecutors. Upon her release, Ellis will be on supervised probation for five years and will be required to pay $19,632.76 in restitution to the church within three years.
