Maryland Approves Scholarships for School Choice Program

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)- The Maryland General Assembly has approved state-funded scholarships that will enable parents to enroll children in private or parochial schools next fall.
Lawmakers included $5 million in the state budget this session for the scholarship program.
The scholarships will go to low-income students who want to attend a school with tuition lower than $14,000. Parents must apply to get the funds and the Maryland State Department of Education will write the rules for how the money will be divided. An advisory board will then determine how many students receive money and the amount of the tuition scholarship.
Maryland joins 30 states and Washington as places with some form of school choice program.
