SALISBURY, Md.- Authorities say a 12-year-old student is facing assault and related charges for beating a guidance counselor at Wicomico Middle School on East Main Street in Salisbury.

The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office reported that at around 11 a.m. Wednesday during the lunch shift at the school, a deputy intervened after a 12-year-old male student began attacking one of the school's guidance counselors.

According to the Sheriff's Office, an investigation revealed that the counselor was speaking with the student when he stepped up and punched the counselor in the face. Investigators said the deputy moved in to stop the assault but the student pushed his way past the deputy and continued his attack on the counselor, who at this point was now lying in a prone position on the cafeteria floor. Authorities said it took the deputy, a teacher and a school administrator to pull the student - who was still repeatedly punching the counselor - off the counselor.

The student was secured and transported from the school to the Sheriff’s Office. Salisbury EMS transported the counselor to Peninsula Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The student was charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct and detained by the Department of Juvenile Services in the Lower Shore Children’s Center pending further court action.
