SALISBURY, Md. - A former high school basketball standout was sentenced Thursday to life in prison for the murder of a teenager last summer.

A circuit court judge sentenced 20-year-old Larry Ennis of Salisbury to life for a February murder conviction, plus an additional ten years for handgun use in a felony.

According to the office of Wicomico County State's Attorney Matt Maciarello, the charges Ennis was convicted of on Feb. 18 stemmed from the shooting death of 17-year-old Rakim Russell on Aug. 2, 2015. Police said just after midnight that day, Ennis and two other codefendants were at a party at America's Best Value Inn when they got into a fight with another group of young people and were asked to leave. Upon leaving the party, Ennis called his friend Jarrett Stokes, and the group met at IHOP, according to police investigation.

When the group returned to America's Best Value Inn, police say Ennis searched the crowd for the person they had been fighting with earlier. According to police, Stokes shot four rounds into a crowd of 75 to 100 people, one of which hit and killed Russell.
