DOVER, Del.- While honoring Earth Day in an annual observance, Delaware State University is celebrating being Tree Campus USA for its fifth year.

DSU is the first Historically Black College and University and the only school in Delaware to be designated as Tree Campus USA since 2012, said Carlos Holmes, school spokesman.

Schools that are designated have created a plan for tree care through school funding, an organized Campus Tree Advisory Committee, related education study and an annual event for Arbor Day, Holmes said.

Since DSU, four other HBCU’s, including Tennessee State University, Texas State University, Virginia State University and West Virginia State University have earned designations.

DSU’s main campus in Dover displays hundreds of trees representing 130 different species.
