Annual Dog Show Won't Return to Wicomico in 2017

SALISBURY, Md. – The Poodle Club of America has announced it’s National Specialty event will not return to Wicomico County in 2017.

The 84th National Specialty is currently underway at the Wicomico County Youth & Civic Center. The show draws over 700 poodles and their handlers to Wicomico County for the week. Next year, those poodles will be shown in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dennis McCoy, President of the Poodle Club of America, says the decision was made for two main reasons. Purina, a major sponsor of the club, which has its own venue in St. Louis, has asked the club to try its arena. Secondly, McCoy says the national event has been looking for a more centrally-located area.

"This is not just the Eastern Poodle Club. This is the Poodle Club of America,” McCoy said, “we have had petitions and requests why we can't look towards the center of the country."

Kristen Goller, Tourism Manager of Wicomico County, calls the news a disappointment. Her office projects this year’s event to bring in roughly $1.5 Million in direct and indirect revenue.

"It's a good example of how competitive the industry is,” Goller said, “We have to work really hard to maintain our events and retain those events that we do attract because there's always locations working just as hard as us to pull them away."

McCoy says he has been more than pleased with how Wicomico has welcomed and served those who have come from across the country for the past 12 years.

“There is no one saying we won’t be back,” he said. “We just have to give this a try.”

Goller points to a new dog show the county has booked for next year, which will showcase retrievers. Although the dates of that event will not fill the void business looking for an April boost have received from the poodle show, she says the revenue that will come from the event will likely make up for this loss.
