CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. -- The Town of Chincoteague, Virginia has elected a new mayor for the first time in 17 years.

According to unofficial results on the State Board of Elections website, Councilman J. "Arthur" Leonard has won with 54.34% of the vote. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Leonard had 707 votes Tuesday night, while Wanda J. Thornton had 426 and Charles S. "Chuck" Ward had 168. There were no write-in votes.

Chincoteague Mayor Jack Tarr announced back in February that he would not seek another term after serving as the town's mayor for 17 years.

In the Town of Onley, Incumbent Jack Pierson narrowly won the race. According to unofficial results, Pierson won 54.2% of the vote compared to Billye Custis' 45.8%. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Pierson walked away with 71 votes compared to Custis' 60. There were no write-in votes.

In Parksley, Mayor James Eichelberger, Sr. nearly swept the vote. According to unofficial results, he walked away with 80.77% of the vote compared to Steven Atkins' 19.23%. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Eichelberger had 63 votes. Atkins had only 15. Again, there were no write-in votes.

Accomack County towns where mayoral candidate were unopposed are: Accomac, where Richard P. Wallace was the only candidate; Belle Haven, where Larry S. Baxter was the only candidate; Hallwood, where J.W. "Jackie" Poulson Jr. was the only candidate; Onancock, where Russell A. Jones was the only candidate; Saxis, where Denise L. Drewer was the only candidate; Tangier, where James W. "Ooker" Eskridge was the only candidate; and finally Wachapreague, where Frederick M. Janci Jr. was the only candidate.
