LEWES, Del. - One of the most heavily-traveled roads in Lewes will be closed for much of the month, due to some scheduled railroad repairs. Kings Highway, in between Beach Plum Drive and DeVries Circle, was blocked off starting on Monday, and is expected to remain closed until May 27.

"Simply put we're upgrading the track," said Justin Baynard, who was working on the track. "We're trying to make the crossing better for both train movements and vehicles crossing... If you look at these ties here, these are all bad. They’re getting old. They’re not holding the spikes correctly.”

A detour has been established to go around the impacted area. Donna Garland, from Bethany Beach, was in Lewes for a doctor's appointment, and spent an extra couple of minutes finding her way past the closure.

“We all know the shortcuts," she said. "So we all know how to get around it... But aside from that, it’s just getting it done before the tourists show up. That’s always the big deal."

Baynard said the crew is optimistic about finishing before Memorial Day, which is on May 30 this year. Neighbor Bill Cowan said that he is hopeful it is finished before that weekend, because the area becomes full of tourists.

"It's a madhouse," he said. "Tourists by the ton. Plus the locals. Plus the ambulances, plus the school buses, plus the fire trucks. It’s a very, very busy road.”
