DELMAR, Md.- The Maryland State Highway Administration has plans to expand the truck weigh and inspection stations along US 13 in Delmar. SHA officials said the facilities are in need of improvement.

The new weigh and inspection station will be larger for increased turn around radius and easier and safer driving on and off US 13, according to SHA spokesman Charles Gishler.

Neighbors in the Leonard Mill community area, such as Joanne Bushman, said enlarging the weigh station will carve out large forested areas and create more noise and safety issues for the community.

More than 20 years ago the SHA shelved the weigh station expansion project because of neighbors concerns.

"The expansion will of course change the quality of life in this area permanently," Bushman said. "When they visited this the first time they were supposed to find another place to put the scales and no one has done this in all these years."

SHA officials held a public meeting Wednesday to hear neighbors concerns about the expansion before finalizing the design plan.

Gishler said the final design for the project is expected to be completed by winter 2016. If approved, construction on the US 13 truck weigh and inspection station would start in 2017.
