DOVER, Del.- Construction has begun on a $24 million sports complex in Kent County.

The complex, which is slated to put 13 sports fields in one spot, has been talked about for seven years now. Kent County Levy Court President Brooks Banta says it is a victory for Kent County.

"This project is a win-win not just for Kent County but for the state of Delaware," he said. "Importantly, moms, dads and kids will now have a place to have their sports rather than having to travel to New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. They can come here."

Elected officials from all levels of government were on hand Thursday to break ground on the year-long construction project.

The project costs $24 million, and Kent County is borrowing some of that money in hopes of making enough to pay it back.

Kent County Levy Court says tax payers will not be on the hook for the bill even if it is asked to cover a budget shortfall.

Not all residents are on board with the project. Norris Hudson has lived down the road from the planned site for 60 years.

"I know they tell us they're going to bring in everything from Wawa to McDonald's," he said. "But I don't believe any of that. I see what we see now is that the crime rate will go up, the traffic's already up and it will go even higher."

Project managers say they hope to draw almost $20 million to Kent County in terms of economic development. That is because of the money the facility will draw to the area.

DE Turf is set to host its first games in spring 2017.
