Cyclist Charged After Crash in Lewes

LEWES, Del.- A bicyclist is facing charges after a crash near Lewes Saturday morning.

Just before 9 a.m., Troopers responded to Coastal Highway and Dartmouth Drive for a report of a bicyclist struck in the roadway. 

Police say Dimitri Jamal Rich, 22 of Longneck, was on his bicycle eastbound across Coastal Highway and traveled into the northbound lanes in front of oncoming traffic. The bicyclist struck the front left side of a car driven by by Martha Monell, 69 of Maryland. After impact,  he was thrown from his bicycle onto the road. The Mini Cooper came to a controlled stop on Coastal Highway.
 
Martha Monell was properly restrained and uninjured in the collision. Rich was transported by EMS to the Beebe Medical Center where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Rich was charged with person operating bicycle to ride to the right of roadway, fail to give hand and arm signals and bicyclist to use designated path when provided. He was also wanted on other traffic charges.
 
Coastal Highway and Dartmouth Drive in the area of the crash was not impacted while the crash was investigated and cleared.
