DOVER, Del.-  A member of the Dover Police Cadet program is being credited with saving the life of a 74-year-old man at the Dover Public Library.

According to the Dover Police Department, Cadet Thomas Rivera was working a security detail at the Dover Library on May 14. While making security checks in the building before closing time, Rivera heard a strange noise from the men's bathroom, police said.

Upon entering the room, Rivera saw a 74-year-old man, turning blue and having difficulty breathing. According to police, the man signaled to Rivera that he was choking, and the cadet was able to successfully dislodge the item from the man's throat through the Heimlich maneuver.

The Dover Police Department's Cadet Program is in its second year and frequently provides security details at the Dover Library.
