OCEAN CITY, Md.- New smaller smoking receptacles have replaced the bright orange barrels seen on the beach last year. Ocean City town officials said the low-key smaller receptacles are mounted to post in the designated smoking areas along the beach.

Officials said the diminished presence does not mean Ocean City is any less serious about the enforcement of the smoking ordinance established last year. Ocean City Communications Manager Jessica Waters said the decision to replace the bright orange barrels was to cut down on maintenance and cost.

"We lost a lot of barrels to the storm and it was just more cost effective and better for our maintenance staff to replace the orange barrels with these new smaller ones," Waters said.

The new receptacles can be found along the beach in the same areas the previous barrels were placed. The designated smoking area is within 15 feet of each receptacle.
