SALISBURY, Md.- Science students from Salisbury Christian School on Thursday got hands-on experience in Chesapeake Bay restoration, through an interactive program.

Students learned about the importance of oyster restoration and the environmental importance of the bay's keystone species through an interactive lesson taught by Perdue Farms Chairman Jim Perdue, in conjunction with the Oyster Recovery Partnership.

Jim Perdue said the students joined ORP and Perdue associates to help fill hundreds of bags with oyster shells, which will be used for oyster hatchery production, giving students the opportunity to directly contribute to increasing the number of oysters filtering the bay's waters.

"This is the future and they're very interested in the environment. They're interested in the Chesapeake Bay. It's a complicated issue and there are a lot of variable involved in the bay, we  want to make sure they're aware of the importance and that they can help and actually get hands-on in putting shells in bags and later on even getting involved in putting oysters back in the bay itself," Perdue said.

The bags filled by Salisbury Christian School students on Thursday will be used for oyster hatchery production at Perdue Farms in Wicomico County.
