Police: Deadly Crash Caused by Sleeping Driver

Posted: Updated:

SMYRNA, Del. - A Kent County woman was killed Tuesday morning in a crash after police say another driver fell asleep at the wheel and hit her.

According to Delaware State Police, the accident happened around 11:35 a.m. as 75-year-old Jose Tuma-Aid of Hartly was driving east of Bryn Zion Road in Smyrna. Police said Tuma-Aid fell asleep while driving, causing his car to drift off the north edge of the roadway, hitting the back of a car that was stopped on the westbound shoulder.

Police said the second car was being driven by 84-year-old Doris Johnson of Hartly. The impact caused her car to move westbound into a small ditch, before coming to a stop in the road.

According to state troopers, Johnson, who was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Kent General Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Tuma-Aid was taken to Kent General with minor injuries. Police say he was also wearing a seatbelt.

Police say the crash is still under investigation, but alcohol use is not suspected to have played a role.

Wheatley’s Pond Road between Bryn Zion Road and Mt. Friendship Road was closed for approximately two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
