MILFORD, Del.- A 46-year-old Milford man is behind bars following accusations that he raped and strangled a woman.

Milford police on Tuesday announced that Jorge La Cruz was charged on June 12 with two counts of first-degree rape, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, two counts of aggravated menacing, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, strangulation, third-degree assault, terroristic threatening, offensive touching and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Police said Cruz's arrest stemmed from a series of incidents that happened June 10 and June 11 at a home on the 900 block of SE 2nd Street. Investigators said that on the morning of June 10, Cruz attempted to hit the 34-year-old victim with an iron during an argument. Police said that in the evening of June 10, Cruz got into another argument with the woman when he pushed her out of the chair she was sitting in, knocking her to the floor. Investigators said Cruz then grabbed a knife and pulled her into the bathroom and held her at knife point, not allowing her to leave the bathroom.

Cruz then threatened to kill the victim and her family members, according to police. Police said one of the two children who were inside the home during the incident attempted to make contact with the victim through the bathroom door. Cruz then walked out of the bathroom and took the child to bed, authorities said. They said Cruz later returned to the bathroom, grabbed the victim around her neck and began to strangle her. Cruz stopped when the second child came near the bathroom door, police said.

Investigators said that hours later, on the morning of June 11, Cruz forced the victim to perform sex acts. Cruz later forcefully sexually assaulted her, according to police.

The victim suffered minor injuries during the incidents and was treated at a local hospital and later released, police said.

Following his arrest on the aforementioned charges, Cruz was arraigned and ordered held in default of $29,400 secured bond.
