DOVER, Del.- WBOC has previously reported on the intersection of Jenkins Pond Road and Route 1 in Milford.

People are upset about the detour down that road because Thompsonville Road is closed for overpass construction.

That's just one project the Delaware Department of Transportation is working on. There are more in Kent County just in time for summer beach traffic.

DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan says the problem is all the access points onto Route 1. Just south of Dover Air Force Base there are private roads and driveways that spill out onto the highway. DelDOT is working on the eight mile stretch between the base and Milford.

"To make it more safe, what we're doing is all these grade separated interchanges throughout," said Cohan. "Starting from Dover Air Force Base all the way down to the beach."

That includes projects at Little Heaven, Thompsonville Road, South Frederica and Northeast French Street in Milford.

Ryan Smith has lived next to the site of the Little Heaven construction project for about a year and says he is not a fan of it.

"Because you have to go down and do a u-turn to even get into the park over here," he said. "Not to mention the traffic with the stop and go [near the neighborhood.] It takes you 20 minutes to get anywhere; It's pointless in my opinion.

Cohan says that is certainly temporary.

"Yes, it's going to be inconvenient during construction, but once we're done it'll be much safer and easier for the locals to move around as well as getting the traffic and tourists to the beaches quicker and safer," she said.

DelDOT says it will stop construction Friday evenings and weekends.

The Little Heaven project is not expected to be completed until September 2018, according to Greg Layton, a spokesman for DelDOT. He says the Thompsonville project will be done sooner in September 2016.
