SALISBURY, Md. – Wicomico County officials say they are keeping all options open after a professional hockey league has expressed interest in expanding into Salisbury.

The Federal Hockey League, a single-A level league, says it has expressed serious interest in locating a team to the Wicomico County Youth & Civic Center in Salisbury.

Vice Commissioner of the FHL, Andrew “Sarge” Richards, said his league, which is in its seventh year, is looking to broaden itself geographically.

“Salisbury has all the things we are looking for,” said Richards, “We just need to meet and look at the details.”

According to Richards, he and other top officials are waiting to hear back from Wicomico County so the two sides can arrange a meeting. Wicomico Parks ad Rec Director Steve Miller stated the county is looking at many options.

"It's still early on in the process,” said Miller. “We're doing our due diligence on any opportunities that are out there. We're willing to explore anything and we're just in those very preliminary stages."

The FHL believes the county’s ability to now sell alcohol and liquor at the civic center is a necessity to hosting a professional hockey team. According to Richards, for a team to survive, each game would generally need to see 1,200 to 1,500 attendees at roughly $10 per ticket.
