PARSONSBURG, Md.- People in Wicomico County are fondly remembering Jacob Schertz. The 18-year-old recent graduate of Wicomico High School was struck and killed Wednesday of last week while riding his bicycle a little over a mile from his home.

A make-shift memorial of flowers and a balloon were placed at the spot on Mt. Hermon Road in Parsonsburg where Jake was struck. Neighbors along Mount Herman Road like Jesse Henry, who works at B & J's Market, said they always would see Jake riding his bike and giving a friendly wave.

"He would always run up and down the road. I would either see him on foot or on a bike doing his thing. He would always wave, always a nice kid," Henry said.

Hazel Scarborough's home sits yards away from where Jake was struck and recalls finding out from neighbors someone had been killed in front of their home.

"My husband went to close the garage door and he looked out and there was all this commotion. We just wondered what was wrong but we were scared to go down there because it was getting dark," Scarborough said.

According to Maryland State Police, Schertz was riding his bike westbound along Mount Herman Road when he was struck from behind by a teenage driver. When the news spread of Schertz's passing, neighbors were heartbroken.

"It's sad and bad what happened. It's really a tragic thing that happened," Henry said.

"It's heartbreaking. We do worry over this road because it's really dangerous. We use to ride bikes and walk down there, no we just don't go out there riding anymore on bicycles," Scarborough said.

Neighbors said they are hoping the county will soon take action to make Mt. Hermon Road safer so another similar tragedy doesn't happen.
