BERLIN, Md. - A Virginia man was killed Wednesday night following a crash in West Ocean City along Route 50, according to Maryland State Police.

Troopers with the Berlin Barrack said the one-vehicle crash happened around 9 p.m. on Route 50 westbound in the area of Grays Corner Road.

A preliminary investigation indicates a 2004 silver Infiniti G35, driven by Nicolas Lawrence Quental, 19, of Manassas Park, Va., was driving westbound on Route 50 when for unknown reasons, he traveled into the center median and hit a tree, police said. Troopers said Quental was thrown from the car, then the car caught fire.

Police said Quental, who was the only person in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been notified and his body has been sent to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

Rt. 50 at Grays Corner Road was closed for about four hours in both directions.
