LAUREL, Del. - A celebration of life was held Thursday afternoon at the Laurel Fire Department for businessman and philanthropist Johnny Janosik. The event was designed as a social event to share a table, and share stories, about a man loved by so many in Delaware.

Having the celebration of life at the Laurel Fire Department just made sense because Janosik was a man who did so much for so many in Laurel.  Among the people in attendance were those who knew Janosik on a personal level, some even growing up with him.

"For me personally, he guided and directed me through many things in my lifetime," said Beth Messick of Laurel.  "Through childhood, and he taught me a lot of different things between right and wrong and taught me business things also.

Others on hand Thursday were those who considered Janosik as a friend and someone they worked with in the business world.  Bob Wheatley of Laurel considered Janosik as a mentor.

"We spent a lot of time together when we were planning the store and talking about building the store and I learned a lot.  I learned a lot about Laurel history and I learned a lot just about life, just from visiting with Johnny," Wheatley said.

Janosik's passing was felt throughout the state of Delaware.  Several government bodies passed resolutions remembering his life and contributions.  However, those contributions will always be felt most strongly in Laurel.  Laurel's mayor said its Janosik's generosity that is his true legacy.

"He always had that core quality of, 'I want to help others, I just want to help them.  I don't want to give them a hand out, I want to give them a hand up.' And that's what I'll take with me all the time," said Laurel Mayor John Schwed.

Janosik passed away Friday night at the age of 90, but his legacy will not soon be forgotten.
