Sen. Tom Carper Presents 100-Year Award to Mid-Atlantic Farm Credit

GUMBORO, Del. - On Monday morning, a Gumboro farm received a congressional Visit, when Sen. Tom Carper presented a "Congressional Record Statement," honoring 100 years of service, to the "Mid-Atlantic Farm Credit." The informal ceremony was followed by a tour of the Ellis' Farm, a property which used the services of Farm Credit. 

Farm Credit provides loans, leases and financial services to farmers, ranchers, and rural businesses across the United States and Puerto Rico. According to the office of Carper, the Farm Credit system was created in 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Farm Loan Act of 1916. 

"At that time commercial banks were reluctant to take on the risk of loans on the agriculture market," read the statement. "when a single weather event or market downturn could -- and still can -- wipe out an entire year's work." 

Carper was joined by Farm Credit CEO Tom Truitt, and farm-owner Ray Ellis. Carper said that the company has been an important service for farmers on Delmarva. 

"When farmers need access to credit," he said. "Whether it's to buy a new tractor, whether it's to buy a farm, a crop - farm credit is there to help them. And today we come here to celebrate 100 years of that service, and frankly, 100 years of success."
