DOVER, Del. - The City of Dover electric/utility department is investigating an electric bill scam.

The department received several claims Wednesday from customers, stating they had received calls from representatives posing to be with "Delmarva Power" or "City of Dover," with a work order to cut off their electricity. Customers were then advised to call a 1-800 number to prevent their power from being turned off.

The Dover Police Department is warning residents to be advised of the scam and to not send money by phone, pre-paid cards, through money services such as Western Union, or provide their personal information over the phone. The City of Dover electric/utility department is also assuring customers that it does not place calls to collect payments.

If you believe your electricity is at risk of being shut off, contact the City of Dover or your utility service company for more information. On ways you can prevent utility and other types of scams, visit the Dover Police Department website.
