7-Eleven Clerk Fired After Thwarting Armed Robbery

Posted: Updated:

FREDERICK, Md. (AP)- The owner of a convenience store where a clerk disarmed a shotgun-wielding would-be robber says the employee will be fired for violating company policy.

7-Eleven store owner Abdoul Ayub confirmed Joseph Layman's termination Tuesday to The Frederick News-Post.

Surveillance footage shows the clerk grabbing the barrel of a shotgun and wrestling it out of the hand of a suspect who had burst into the store July 12 and pointed the weapon at the clerk.

Ayub says although they're glad Layman wasn't hurt, workers have to follow the franchise agreement. The company's official policy is for employees to not resist a robbery attempt.

A 7-Eleven corporate office representative didn't return a call for comment to the newspaper Tuesday.

The suspect, 18-year-old Ryan J. Wages, is charged with attempted armed robbery.
