SALISBURY, Md.- Delmarva Power is asking Maryland regulators to approve higher base rates for the company's electric customers.

Under rate proposals unveiled Wednesday, a typical residential customer's electric bill would increase by $21.42 per month, to a total bill of $168.64.

The company said an electricity rate hike would generate about $66.2 million to recover the costs of system improvements that have reduced the frequency and duration of power outages. Improvements in the electric system included upgrades to more than 100 circuits and several substations to enhance system reliability, Delmarva Power said.

The company said it has spent more than $330 million on its electric system in Maryland since 2012. It also said the combination of advanced technology and system upgrades have produced a 51 percent drop in the number of outages and when outages do occur, it is able to restore service 69 percent quicker.

Customers with questions can call Delmarva Power’s Customer Care Center at 1-800-375-7117.
