Keeping Animals Cool at Fair

As the current heat wave persists on Delmarva, it is important not only for people attending the Delaware State Fair to stay cool, but the animals as well.  The two essentials to keeping the animals cool are fans and water, according to exhibitors.

"We come here every hour on the hour to walk the pigs to the wash rack and wash them down", says Sam Brittingham, of Brittingham Farms.  We'll take shifts, even through the night."

Fans already in place at the fairgrounds are critical in the care of the animals on hot days.  "The Delaware State Fair does s great job in the horse barn.  They have lot fans", says Carol Shuba, horse owner.  "You can put fans on the stall to keep the horses cool, and give then lots of water to get them through the ten days of the fair.

Some of the animals get used to the routine.  "About the second or third day to the rack, the pigs know the route and they will go on their own. They like it." say Brittingham.

The common theme is everyone keeping a close watch on their animals during these high temperature days.
